Soaking in the last drops of summer

I hope all of you enjoyed your final summer long-weekend!  Derek and I did our best to soak up as much summer as we could.  And I think that knowing cooler temperatures and busy weekends are on their way helped us appreciate it a bit more.

We kicked-off the weekend by participating in The Canadian, Saturday at Mooney's Bay.  It was a jam packed day full of various types of races and events.  Derek ran an 8km and I did my first try-a-tri.  We both really enjoyed ourselves, did pretty well for first-timers, and will definitely participate again.

Here's a photo of Derek stretching it out before his race.

And here I am prepping for the first leg of my tri: the swim!  Super attractive, I know...and this is before the nose plug and goggles!

On Sunday we spent the day at Lac La Peche in the Gatineau Park.  Derek had read an article earlier in the summer about this specific lake and how it was not as busy as others in Gatineau Park.  It is an awesome lake and beach, but a little farther from the city, so I can see why people may not make it all the way out there.

The lake is really big, with a nice cordoned off swimming area with lifeguards.  You can rent kayaks and canoes for a reasonable price, parking is only $10 per car for the day, and I don't think it's ever very busy!

It was the perfect setting for a relaxing Sunday.  We enjoyed a picnic, some wine, canoed around the lake and discovered little private beaches.

That's me!  The water was so warm, and I loved it after having craved a swim in a fresh water lake all summer.

Completing our little Canadiana outing, was the discovery of a huge beaver dam and a pair of loons!

Derek and I will most definitely be taking another trip back to Lac La Peche, maybe even this autumn to take in all the changing colours from a canoe!  Seeing as it is only about 40 minutes from downtown Ottawa, it is the perfect day trip destination for family outings, romantic picnics or a get-together with a bunch of friends.

What did you guys do over the long-weekend?  Anyone participate in a race or other type of outdoor activity?

Stress test

I don’t think I talk about my relationship with Derek too often on the blog, other than little anecdotes here and there, which I do to add some humour and hopefully not pukey cuteness to your read.  Sorry if I make you puke – that is never my intention!

Obviously I am marrying Derek because I think he’s the best man in the world for me.  I consider him my best friend; someone who I feel comfortable telling anything to.  He makes me want to be a better person.  And to keep it real, I just love seeing him in his underwear.  Especially the tight David Beckham’s his mother bought him (thanks June!)...that's not weird, is it?

Since we started dating in July, 2009, I would say we’ve had an extremely successful relationship.  We trust each other 100%, there is no jealousy, and we have fun together with many common interests.  I chalk it up to the fact that we are both pretty easy going people with a lot of patience, who treat each other with kindness, above anything else.

Another reason could be that we’ve basically just been having a lot of fun for the past 3 years.  We have not had to deal with any stressful events or situations so our relationship has never been put under any type of strain.  At one point I even brought this up to Derek, saying “what if we can’t handle it when something stressful comes up?”

I know that our lives are only going to become more challenging with the addition of children, our aspirations for moving up the corporate ladder, and the cost of owning our own home.

Of course, Derek just assured me that we would be fine, and so I believed him and went along eating my sprinkle ice cream cone while walking through Candy Land.  For the record, my Candy Land is basically the Glebe Garage Sale and a high end home furnishing department store - moulded into one lovely avenue full of boutiques which allow sprinkle ice cream cones inside.

Fast forward half a year and we arrive mid-July, 2012: what feels like the busiest time in my life thus far.
  • My best friend is getting married mid-August and I am determined to throw her the most fabulous bridal shower and bachelorette party anyone has ever experienced.
  • Our condo closing date arrives and we have to fork over all our savings.
  • I must pack and move – something I’ve never been great at, as I am a number one procrastinator.
At this point, I’m thinking: maybe I should not have signed up for sports 3 nights per week.  On the other hand, I have no time or energy to workout so thank goodness I’m playing sports!

Miraculously we made it through July.  It was rushed and crazy and a LOT of fun!  My BFF’s wedding events went off without a hitch, and there were only a few slight wrinkles with our closing and the move.

Phewf!  “We made it!”  I thought to myself.  Our relationship can handle some minor chaos!

But then August came, and like those hangovers that creep up a day late, so did the storm cloud over our Candy Land Relationship of vintage trunks and overpriced chandeliers.

Along with being patient and kind, Derek and I are also stubborn and defensive; neither of us wanting to admit when we are incapable of doing something.  We pout and give each other the silent treatment, instead of addressing a situation and can be very passive aggressive.  It’s not pretty and very immature.

I guess our busy schedules, lack of sleep, unorganized new condo and the stress of being first time home owners got to us.

It was hard.  Derek wasn’t acting like the man I knew, and I wasn’t acting the way I wanted to towards him.  I made excuses, saying to myself “He should feel lucky I’m not acting like even more of a crazy person considering how bad of a mood I’m in right now!”  In the back of my head I knew where I had been in the wrong and how I should approach the subject, but I was just too tired and stubborn to act like an adult.

In the end, our little storm cloud only lasted around 24 hours and we managed to work things out over a coffee at Bridgehead.  We didn’t plan to make-up in a coffee shop downtown...in public...but it just sort of happened that way.  I apologize if you had to witness me crying into my coffee the other morning.  I don’t know what it is about serious, emotional conversations but I just always end up crying.

In the end, we concluded that we are team and partners for life.  We have the same goals, share the same values, and love each other to death.  I’m not proud of the way we acted for that short period of time, but I am very happy with the way it was handled in the end and feel confident that we at least got a B on our first stress test.  Hopefully we have learned from our experience and will do better next time.

A stress-free time in Montreal at Osheaga music festival.  If only we could spend every day lying on the grass, drinking beers and listening to good tunes.....

A Valentine's weekend

Furniture shopping may not seem like an adventure (or very romantic for that matter), but the mere fact that we had to walk downtown in freezing temperatures to pick up our car before we set sail was adventure enough.  Friday night, after work, we skated the canal and then went out to dinner at our favourite restaurant Chez Lucien, and ended up walking home, so our Saturday morning started off with a chilly walk into the market.

Before getting going on our list we stopped in at Bridgehead and fueled up/warmed up with some caffeine, soup and a sandwich.  It was delicious - we love the B-Head.

Our first stop was The White Monkey.  Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures.  You must visit this store - even if you just walk by to take in their lovely window displays.  It is a two story building furnished with really awesome antique and retro furniture.  This is the place to go if you are looking for interesting lamps, cool accessories (they carried a lot of vases, serving dishes, kitchenware, etc.)  The store is small so there isn't too much room for large pieces of furniture, but there were a few living room sets with awesome couches from the 60's on display.  The owner had embraced this year's colour of the year and there were pops of Tangerine Tango everywhere - very fun.

After enjoying the White Monkey (haha...) we ventured over to Found Design.  This was definitely our favourite store.  I would have never walked into this store had I not done some research online first.  This is what we saw when looking for the store front.

As we got closer we realized we were actually in the right place....

We weren't sure what to expect as we walked down the cement stairs and stared at the dingy metal door, but as soon as we walked in and our eyes adjusted to the light we knew we had found a gem.  The warehouse style store was immediately inviting and full of interesting, bright and unique mid century furniture. Also - it didn't smell funny, which sometimes happens when you are in a warehouse full of 60+ year old furniture.

Here are some of the things we saw...

We loved the green couch/chair set along with the large swivel chairs.  We are on the hunt for the perfect swivel chair for our living room.

Derek actually said "I think this is the coolest place I've ever been".

This chair was super comfy and I loved the wooden frame.

I thought this desk/shelf was awesome.  Compact, good use of space and lots of storage.  The only thing is that I would love to paint it a bright white, and maybe wall paper the back of the shelves which is probably against the law or something.  So, since  it costs $1500 I'll leave it to someone who appreciates its original look.

This was a really neat swivel chair from the 60's.  The owner had it re-upholstered and re-foamed, so it was nice and fresh and comfortable.  It cost $350.  There was a matching chair for $200 which had not yet been re-done.  The owner said it would cost around $200 for fabric and labour depending on the fabric you choose -  so for around $400 you could have a great chair in the exact fabric of your choice!

Everything at Found Design had a story.  I'm sure we could have spent all afternoon speaking with the owner.  He was gracious and welcoming and we could tell that he loved what he did.  His pieces weren't cheap, but he explained that everything that he brought into his store was designer made and had history.  He also made sure to have things refurbished the right way and not just the "dip and strip" as he called it.  We really liked him and his awesome store.

Next we headed to Hintonburg and stopped by Blueprint which was a lovely store full of beautiful furniture and a huge selection of pillows.  I will say things were pretty expensive, but maybe they have sales every now and again.

I'm looking for a desk for under the window in our bedroom and I liked the look of this guy.

There was a nicely decorated sunken living room in the store.  I love that coffee table.

Across the street was Alteriors, which is a really nice store.  Many of their items are made in Canada and they have regular sales.  For example, everything in the store is tax-free for the month of February.

We loved this table and chairs set.  The chairs are very similar to the ones we purchased.  They had a lot of purple accents in the store, which reminded me of spring, even though it was minus 20 outside.

I had to take a picture of this lamp in the front window.  Check out the gun base!

We reeeeaaaalllyyyyy liked this swivel chair.  It was super comfortable and came in so many different fabrics and leathers.  The fact that it was tax-free got us humming and hahhhing for couple minutes but we made it out of the store without opening our wallets.

We finished off our afternoon in Hull.  First stop was Funky Furniture.  The owner is actually the nephew of the owner of Found Design.  See what you get to know when you start talking to store owners!  It was small space with some pretty funky furniture...yes, it lives up to its name.

Here is a picture of their window display.  I thought the overhanging orange lamp was pretty neat.  I wasn't too sure about the plastic framed chair and side table though.

These paintings of the Original 6 goalies were awesome!  I wanted to buy the set for my little brother, or at least keep them stored until we are ready to decorate a child's room.  So fun, eh?

My second favourite and last stop of the day was Mikaza.  It was a huge space and full of everything I love.  The first thing I noticed was how much selection there was in the seating department.  If you are looking for stools or dining chairs, come here.  They also carry Umbra accessories, so it's a fun place to go when you just want to buy a small accent to perk up your space or to give as a gift.

This red leather beauty caught my eye immediately.  Not cheap though - $400 a pop...so I kept walking.

There was a good selection of swivel chairs, all of which were available in many different fabrics.  We liked both of these the best:

There were a few pieces made from restored wood, including this beautiful console table.  I though it would also be a good fit for under the window in our bedroom.  I liked the sculpted lets and how they had a feminine feel.  I would swap out the chair for something in a pretty fabric, or maybe a "ghost chair".  And don't worry - I wouldn't pain this guy :)

Derek really liked this storage unit for under the television.  It was nice and there was plenty of storage.

I think some open shelving for behind our dining table would look really nice.  This shelf plays off the white from our kitchen cabinets and the polished chrome from our dining table and chairs.

As we were leaving I spotted this beauty.  I would really love a bar cart and this one was the nicest I've seen.  It was HUGE!  I love the mix of materials.  Can't you picture it stocked with liquor, a martini shaker and great glassware?  Too bad the price tag was almost $1500.

I really enjoyed our Valentine's Day outing, especially since it was followed by a 5 star meal cooked by Derek!  It was fun to meet the different store owners and chat with them about their business.  I loved seeing all the beautiful furniture and sharing our ideas about how they would fit in our new home.  It was hard leaving some of the stores without buying anything - not even a picture frame or vase!  But I am really happy about the "research" we did and can't wait to visit the stores again once we are moved in and know exactly what we are looking for and what will fit.  And by the way - how is that for a cheap date?!

For those of you wondering about Green Light District - their store actually no longer exists in Ottawa.  It looks like a really nice place though, so maybe next time I'm in Toronto I will check it out.

On the way home we saw some people paragliding over the Ottawa River.  If you can't tell what those 2 dots are in the sky - they are crazy people!

I hope everyone has a really lovely Valentine's Day today.  We are just exchanging cards tonight and then I'm off to ball hockey.  I think a lot of people celebrated the big V-day over the weekend like we did.  Makes sense.

And on the subject of looooooovvveeee...I want to send a shout out to my 2 best friends who recently got engaged to the loves of their lives!!!!

Congratulations guys!!!

Lisa and Ted, in Jamaica

Ashley and Matt, in Quebec City

Valentine's day plans

Dates for Derek and I have changed over the past 3 years or so.  Maybe evolved is a better way to put it?  At the beginning Derek would bring me to his baseball and hockey games (trying to impress me I assume) and then we would hang out in a parking lot drinking lukewarm cans of Coor’s Light with his team before heading to some dive pub for greasy food (I hope he didn’t think this impressed me!)

When things started to get more serious he pulled out the big guns and started taking me to fancy restaurants, days at Le Spa Nordik, and surprise one-night get-aways.  I’m not going to lie; I loved all of those fancy dates, but I loved it even more when we began to get more comfortable with just hanging out and watching a movie, going for a walk, or meeting up over our lunch hour downtown to catch up and people watch.

Valentine’s Day is one week away, so we have been chatting about what we should do together.  I play ball hockey the evening of the 14th so we decided to celebrate early and do something special together this weekend.  After work, on Friday, we are planning to skate Rideau Canal and check out Winterlude.  Skating on the canal is one of my most favourite winter activities.  We have been twice so far this year and I’m hoping to get out 8 more times to make it 10.  I’ll keep you posted if I reach my goal.  It’s easy for us to get in a quick evening skate since we work and live so close by.

We also wanted to make some plans for Saturday during the day.  We were thinking of using the gift certificates Derek got me for Christmas for Bleu Spa – it’s a newer version of Le Spa Nordik in Cantley, Quebec.  I’m anxious to check it out but honestly am not feeling too hot in a bathing suit these days, so I’m saving it until the effects of Christmas wear off.  Derek, being a typical man, told me that I was stupid but that I looked awesome, and then agreed to let me choose something else.

Guess what I chose?!  An afternoon of furniture shopping!!!

For some, this may seem like an odd way to celebrate Valentine's Day, but to me it's perfection.

Side note: when I was single, one of my favourite ways to spend a weekend afternoon would be to grab a coffee and browse the furniture stores downtown in the Market.  I would roam the stores, imagining my favourite pieces in my dream home while at the same time eavesdropping on couples who were furniture shopping together.  I would hear them discuss their likes and dislikes about couches and tables and how it would fit in their new condo.  I would long to join their conversation, or better yet, have a partner of my own to join me in my hunt for the perfect desk.  I know - this was sort of creepy.  Thankfully I now have my partner, Derek, so I don't have to live vicariously through the strangers in EQ-3.

I'm pretty sure Saturday afternoon furniture browsing is not one of Derek's top ideas for a good time, but it's Valentine's Day, which means he has to humour his future wife.

I've made a list of stores I would like to visit.  For the most part they are stores which I have never been to before.  I'm really looking forward to discovering some hidden gems and getting inspiration!

Here's my list (in no particular order):
  • Funky Furniture Ottawa - mid century used furniture (my new obsession)
located at 185 Eddy Street in Hull
  • Mikaza - husband and wife owned, specializing in modern furniture, lighting and décor
located at 120 du Portage in Old Hull
  • The White Monkey - vintage and retro furniture and accessories from the 50's, 60's and 70's
located at 395 Gladstone Avenue in Ottawa
  • Found Design - vintage and mid century modern design
located at 164 Elm Street in Ottawa
  • Green Light District - unusual furniture and accessories from markets across the world
located at 223 Dalhousie Street in Ottawa
  • Blueprint Home - fresh, elegant and modern furniture
located at 1301 Wellington Street in Ottawa
  • Alteriors - contemporary furniture and lighting
located at 1304 Wellington Street in Ottawa

I'm pretty excited, as you may be able to tell!  We are planning on heading out around 11am, grabbing a coffee and beginning our adventure on the Quebec side.  All the stores are located pretty centrally so we won't have to do too much driving.

Some items I will be looking for specifically include
  • stools for our kitchen island
  • lighting
  • chairs for our living room
  • a coffee table
  • a desk for the bedroom

Here are some pieces of furniture I really loved from browsing the stores' websites:

1960's teak lounge chairs for the living room from  Found Design

awesome bench for the entrance from Blueprint Home

great stackable stools for our island from Blueprint Home

love this desk for the bedroom from Mikaza

floor lamp from Mikaza

Once the summer and nicer weather hits I am looking forward to scouring garage sales, antique auctions and flea markets.  But until then I will enjoy these heated stores and hopefully leave with some great ideas and maybe a deal or two!

Am I missing any must-see furniture stores in Ottawa?  If so, please fill me in.  And what does everyone else have planned for the big V-day?

Derek turned 31 January 17!  Since then it's been a lot of this....

  • cleaning the apartment
  • buying food
  • preparing food
  • hosting parties
  • eating
  • drinking
  • drinking
  • dancing
  • laughing
  • drinking
  • eating
  • sleeping
  • cleaning the apartment
  • dinner with mama June
  • eating
  • drinking
  • dinner with papa Terr and Heather

  • ................................so much for my new year's "cleanse"....

It's never ending!  I can't blame Derek - I celebrate my birthday for the whole month of August, so one week of birthday celebrations is nothing.

Last night we celebrated Derek's birthday with just each other and it was perfect.  We had a lovely evening enjoying some of Ottawa's restaurants and pubs and saw a great movie, The Descendants.  The weather wasn't too cold, so we walked in the softly falling snow - it was romantic.

Happy Birthday best friend!  xoxoxo
